Day-by-Day Route

Day 1 — Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Desert: Depart Marrakech, cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka (2,260 m — Morocco’s highest paved pass). Stop at Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO ksar, free entry, 1.5–2 hrs). Continue through Ouarzazate (optional Atlas Film Studios stop) and into the Dades Valley — the iconic snaky road. On the Zagora route: south through the Draa Valley instead. Overnight: Dades (Merzouga route) or Zagora area desert camp.

Day 2 — Gorges → Dunes → Sahara Camp: Morning through Todgha Gorges (300-metre canyon walls). Stop at Erfoud (fossil workshops — 500-million-year-old trilobites) and Rissani (the most authentic souk in southern Morocco). Arrive Merzouga in the afternoon. Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes (1–1.5 hrs). Watch the sunset from a dune summit. Arrive at the desert camp: dinner, Berber drumming and campfire, then stargazing under the Milky Way — zero light pollution, one of the clearest skies on earth.

Day 3 — Sunrise → Return: Wake before dawn. Climb a dune for the Sahara sunrise — silence, shifting colours, and the Erg Chebbi glowing gold and pink. After breakfast: sandboarding down the dunes (free boards at camp). Visit a nomadic Berber family (tea, freshly baked bread, a glimpse of traditional desert life). Return to Merzouga by camel, then drive back to Marrakech via the Skoura oasis and palm groves. Arrive evening. Optional: hammam (traditional steam bath + argan oil massage) to wash off the sand.

At the Dunes

The Sahara experiences are what make a desert tour unforgettable. Five highlights happen at or near the dunes: the camel trek through golden sand (the timeless image of Morocco — full camel guide), the sunset watched from atop a dune as colours shift from gold to fiery orange to pink, the desert camp night with private tents and en-suite bathrooms under a blanket of stars, the Berber drumming session around the campfire (rhythmic, hypnotic, and genuinely special), and the sunrise — worth waking for at 5 AM, watched in silence from a dune summit as the Sahara comes alive.

Stargazing deserves its own mention: the Sahara has zero light pollution. On a clear night, you’ll see the Milky Way with the naked eye, along with constellations, shooting stars, and (depending on the season) planets visible as bright pinpoints. Sandboarding is simple fun — camps provide boards, you climb a dune and slide down. No skill required. Medfouna (“Berber pizza”) — a meat-stuffed flatbread baked in sand — is the desert’s signature dish, typically served at lunch. And a visit to a nomadic Berber family living in a traditional tent is a humbling, warm experience that puts the landscape into human context.

Merzouga or Zagora?

The route you choose determines which highlights you see. Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) — the 3-day route — includes the most stops: Ait Ben Haddou, Dades, Todgha, Erfoud, Rissani, and Morocco’s tallest dunes. Zagora (Erg Chigaga) — the 2-day route — goes through the Draa Valley’s 200-km oasis corridor instead. Both include a camel trek, desert camp, and all the Sahara experiences.
