Zagora vs Merzouga

Camel caravan in Erg Chigaga — the remote, wild dune sea accessible from Zagora via M’Hamid

Visitors choosing a Moroccan desert experience often weigh Zagora against Merzouga. They offer different desert landscapes:

Zagora → Erg Chigaga: Morocco’s most remote and wild dune expanse. Requires 4×4 access from M’Hamid El Ghizlane. Fewer tourists, vast silence, raw Saharan wilderness. The journey through the Draa Valley (date palms, kasbahs, oases) is a highlight in itself. Best for adventurers seeking solitude.

Merzouga → Erg Chebbi: Morocco’s most photogenic and accessible dunes — towering golden erg right at the edge of town. Well-developed tourist infrastructure, camel treks, luxury camps. The route passes through Dades and Todgha Gorges. Best for first-time desert visitors.

Both are excellent. MDT offers tours to both. For a detailed side-by-side comparison, see our Agafay vs Merzouga vs Zagora guide.

The Draa Valley

Draa Valley — ancient kasbah amid date palms, one of Morocco’s most scenic desert corridors

The Draa Valley is one of Morocco’s great natural wonders — a 200-km ribbon of date palm oases stretching from Ouarzazate to Zagora and beyond, fed by the Draa River (Morocco’s longest, at over 1,000 km). The valley is a corridor of green in an otherwise arid landscape: millions of date palms, terraced fields, Berber villages, and ancient mud-brick kasbahs perched above the river.

The scenic drive from Ouarzazate to Zagora (~2.5 hours on the N9) is one of the most beautiful road journeys in Morocco — through the Draa gorge, past the fortress of Agdz (a good lunch stop), and along the palm-lined valley floor. The date harvest in October is a particularly evocative time — the air smells sweet and the oases are at their most productive. Zagora’s dates (especially the Medjool variety) are among Morocco’s finest.

Landmarks

The iconic “Tombouctou 52 Jours” sign — marking the historic caravan route from Zagora to Timbuktu

The Timbuktu Sign: On the western edge of town stands the famous “Tombouctou 52 Jours” hand-painted sign — marking the historic 52-day journey that camel caravans once made across the Sahara to Timbuktu in Mali. It’s one of Morocco’s most iconic photo opportunities and symbolises Zagora’s centuries-old role as a gateway to the deep desert. The original sign has been repainted and relocated over the years, but the current version remains a must-see stop.

Musée des Arts et Traditions de la Vallée de Draa: Housed in the Ksar Tissergate — a beautifully restored mud-brick fortified village — this museum spans 3 floors of exhibits on traditional Draa Valley life. Collections include Berber jewellery, weapons, wedding attire, agricultural tools, and household objects, all thoughtfully explained in French and English. Entry: ~20 MAD. Allow 45–60 minutes.

Amezrou: A short walk from Zagora’s centre, the village of Amezrou has a historic Jewish silversmith quarter (mellah) — a reminder of the diverse communities that once populated the Draa Valley. Some traditional silver workshops remain active. The village also hosts several of Zagora’s best guesthouses, set among palm gardens.

Festivals

Festival of Nomads: Held in nearby M’Hamid El Ghizlane (the last village before Erg Chigaga), this 3-day celebration of nomadic Berber life typically falls in March or April. Expect music performances, poetry readings, craft workshops, storytelling, camel races, and traditional cuisine prepared over open fires. It’s one of the most authentic cultural events in southern Morocco — attracting both locals and international visitors.

Moussem of Moulay Abdelkader Jilali: A religious gathering honouring the Sufi saint, drawing pilgrims from across the Draa Valley for music, dance, and communal celebration. The date varies annually, aligned with Mawlid Nabawi (the Prophet’s birthday) on the Islamic calendar.

Date harvest (October): While not a formal festival, the annual date harvest transforms the valley — families climb the palms, dates dry in the sun on rooftops and terraces, and the souks fill with fresh produce. Visiting during harvest season adds a layer of agricultural life to the desert experience.

Food & Accommodation

Food: Zagora’s restaurants serve traditional southern Moroccan cuisine. Try tagine kefta (spiced meatball stew in tomato sauce), pastilla (savoury pastry), couscous with lamb, and salade marocaine (diced tomato, onion, and pepper). Restaurant Marwa is the local favourite — generous portions, reasonable prices (~40–80 MAD per meal). Villa Zagora offers more upscale dining in a garden setting with pool. Complement meals with mint tea or fresh orange juicealcohol is very limited in Zagora due to local customs.

Accommodation: The best options are in the Amezrou palm grove area, just outside town. Riad Lamane — Moorish architecture, pool, spa, terrace restaurant. La Fibule de Draa — lush gardens, plunge pool, atmospheric. Riad dar Sofian — ornate carvings, Arabic mosaics. For a desert night: Tizi Luxury Camp — outside Zagora, full desert immersion with stargazing. Prices: €30–80/night for riads; luxury camps from €100+.

How to Get There

From Marrakech: ~360 km / 6–7 hours via the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass and Ouarzazate. The best option is MDT’s 2-day desert tour from €69 — all-inclusive with transport, Ait Ben Haddou stop, Draa Valley drive, camel ride, desert camp, and return. CTM bus: ~8 hours, ~140 MAD. Grand taxi or rental car also possible.

From Ouarzazate: ~170 km / 2.5 hours on the N9 through the Draa Valley. Bus: ~55 MAD, ~3 hours.

By air: Zagora Airport (OZG) has Royal Air Maroc flights from Casablanca (~2 hours). No direct flights from Marrakech — fly to Ouarzazate and continue by road (2.5 hrs).

Within Zagora: The town is compact and walkable. Petit taxis available for short distances. For Erg Chigaga excursions, 4×4 transport is arranged from M’Hamid (1.5 hrs south of Zagora).
