How to Plan a Sahara Desert Tour in Morocco (2026)

Visit Kingdom of Morocco teamJune 2026

When to Go — Best Season for the Sahara

The Sahara isn’t one temperature year-round. The difference between a March evening (pleasant) and a July afternoon (unbearable) is the difference between a great trip and a miserable one. Here’s the honest breakdown:

Best

Spring — March to May

25–35°C days, 15–20°C nights. Clear skies, wildflowers in the valleys, perfect camp temperatures. The #1 recommended season. April is peak.

Best

Autumn — Sep to Nov

25–32°C days, 12–18°C nights. Similar to spring, slightly cooler by November. October is the second most popular month. Post-summer prices.

Avoid

Summer — June to Aug

40–50°C daytime. Dangerous heat. Camp tents are ovens. We strongly advise against summer tours. If you must, expect A/C surcharges and limited activities.

Doable

Winter — Dec to Feb

18–22°C days, 0–5°C nights. Days are pleasant but nights are freezing in camp. Pack serious warm layers. Clear skies, no crowds, lower prices.

Insider tip: The single best week? Late March / early April. Warm enough for comfortable camping, cool enough for daytime sightseeing, and the Dades Valley almond trees are in bloom. For detailed monthly data, see our Best Time to Visit Morocco guide.

How Many Days Do You Need?

This is the most important planning decision. The number of days determines which dunes you reach, what you see en route, and how rushed (or relaxed) the experience feels. Here’s the complete route comparison:

Route Days Dunes From (Shared) From (Private) Best For
Marrakech → Zagora 2 Erg Lihoudi (small) €85 €195 Short on time
Marrakech → Merzouga 3 Erg Chebbi ★ €85 €195 Most popular
Marrakech → Merzouga 4 Erg Chebbi + Todgha €280 More stops, relaxed
Marrakech → Fes via desert 3 Erg Chebbi €95 €220 Connecting cities
Fes → Marrakech 4 Erg Chebbi + Dades €280 Starting from Fes
Marrakech → Erg Chigaga 4 Erg Chigaga (remote) €350 Off-grid, solitude
Casablanca → Merzouga 6 Erg Chebbi + Atlas €450 Full Morocco
Our recommendation: If you have 3 days, the shared 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is the sweet spot — you cross the Atlas Mountains, see Aït Ben Haddou, reach the iconic Erg Chebbi dunes, sleep in a desert camp, ride camels at sunset, and return. It’s the tour that made us famous. If you have 4+ days, add Todgha Gorges and Dades Valley.

Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga — Which Dunes?

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) ★

Dune height: up to 150m
Access: 3-day tour from Marrakech
Camps: Budget → luxury (see our camp guide)
Activities: Camel trek, quad biking, sandboarding, 4×4 excursions
Vibe: Classic Sahara postcard. More developed, more options. Choose this for your first desert trip.

Erg Chigaga (M’hamid)

Dune height: up to 300m
Access: 4-day tour, final stretch by 4×4 only
Camps: Fewer, more exclusive
Activities: Camel trek, stargazing (zero light pollution)
Vibe: Raw wilderness, almost no other tourists. Choose this for solitude and adventure.

90% of first-time visitors choose Erg Chebbi — and we agree. It delivers the full Sahara experience with the most convenient access. Erg Chigaga is for return visitors or those specifically seeking remoteness. Read the full comparison in our Merzouga guide.

Where to Start — Marrakech or Fes?

Marrakech is the starting point for 85% of desert tours. It’s closer to both Erg Chebbi (via Ouarzazate and Dades) and Erg Chigaga (via Zagora). Most 3-day tours depart from Marrakech.

Fes works if you’re already in the north. The route goes through the Middle Atlas, cedar forests, and Ifrane — a different landscape entirely. A Fes-to-Marrakech desert tour is also an efficient way to connect the two cities with a desert night in between.

Smart routing: If your Morocco itinerary includes both Marrakech and Fes, book a one-way desert tour between them. You get the desert experience AND avoid backtracking. 3–4 days, from €95 shared.

Must-See Stops Along the Way

Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou UNESCO site — must-see stop on Sahara desert tour
Aït Ben Haddou — UNESCO World Heritage stop on every desert route

The drive to the Sahara is half the experience. Every route passes through spectacular landscapes that most first-time visitors don’t expect. Here are the highlights:

Tizi N’Tichka Pass (2,260m) — the highest road pass in Morocco, crossing the High Atlas Mountains. Dramatic switchbacks with panoramic views. All Marrakech-departure tours cross this. For more Atlas experiences, see our Atlas Mountains travel guide.

Aït Ben Haddou (also spelled Ait Ben Haddou) — UNESCO ksar and Hollywood filming location (Gladiator, Game of Thrones). Stop for photos and a guided walk through the ancient lanes. If you want a full day here, consider the Ouarzazate day trip.

Ouarzazate — “Hollywood of Africa.” Atlas Studios, Kasbah Taourirt, and the gateway to the desert.

Dades Valley — the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” Dramatic gorges, the famous serpentine road, overnight in a valley hotel. Featured on 4-day tours.

Todgha Gorges — 300m-high canyon walls rising from the riverbed. A short walk into the gorge is included on most 4-day itineraries.

Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest river, lined with palm oases and mud-brick villages. The return route on 4-day Merzouga tours. Nearby, the Skoura Oasis offers ancient kasbahs and lush palm groves — a hidden gem on the desert circuit.

Desert Camp Options — What to Expect

Every tour includes one night (minimum) sleeping in a desert camp near the dunes. Camp quality varies enormously — this is where your budget makes the biggest difference.

Standard Camp

Shared tents (4–8 beds), communal bathroom, basic but clean. Included on all shared and most private tours. Dinner around the campfire, Berber music, stargazing. This is the authentic experience.

Luxury Camp

Private tent with ensuite bathroom, real beds, electricity, sometimes heating/A/C. Gourmet dinner. Typically €30–80 per person upgrade. We recommend luxury for winter tours (heated tents matter at 3°C). Read our full Merzouga luxury camp guide for what “luxury” should actually mean.

Camp reality check: Even “luxury” camps are in the middle of the desert. Expect limited water pressure, occasional sand, and basic facilities by hotel standards. The magic is the location — waking up in the dunes at sunrise is worth any minor inconvenience.

What to Pack

Desert dress code — lightweight layers with sun protection

Pack light — your main luggage stays in the vehicle. You only carry a small daypack to the camp. Essentials:

Clothing: Light layers for daytime, warm jacket/fleece for evenings (desert nights drop 15–20°C from daytime), scarf or buff for sand/wind protection, comfortable closed-toe shoes for dune walking.

Sun protection: Hat, sunglasses, SPF50 sunscreen — the desert sun is intense even in winter.

Tech: Camera, power bank (camps may have limited charging), headlamp for nighttime camp navigation.

Winter extras (Dec–Feb): Thermal base layer, warm sleeping bag liner, gloves, beanie. Nights can hit 0°C.

Safety & Practical Tips

Is it safe? Yes — Morocco Sahara tours are very safe with a licensed operator. The routes are driven daily, vehicles are maintained, and guides know the terrain. The main risks are sun exposure and dehydration — both easily managed.

Hydration: Drink 2–3L of water per day minimum. Water is included on all MDT tours. Bring a reusable bottle.

Tipping: Not mandatory, but customary. Guide: 100–200 MAD/day for the group. Driver: 50–100 MAD/day. Camp staff: 20–50 MAD.

Cash: Bring some MAD cash for souvenirs, drinks, and tips. ATMs are available in Ouarzazate and Tinghir but not once you’re in the desert.

Motion sickness: The Atlas Mountain roads are winding. If you’re prone to motion sickness, sit in front and take medication beforehand.

Licensed operator: Always book with a licensed company (check for a license number). This ensures insurance, vehicle standards, and accountability. Our license: N° 16D/19.
