The 4-day Erg Chigaga desert tour from Marrakech costs from €379 per person — three nights half-board (two kasbah stops in the Draa valley and a private camp in the dunes), your own 4×4 and driver-guide, and the sunset camel ride included, always private. Chigaga is Morocco’s wildest great erg: the tarmac ends at M’Hamid and the final hour runs off-road, which is precisely why the dunes carry no town, no lights and almost no other camps. The route goes down the Draa’s hundred kilometres of palms with the ancient ksar of Tamnougalt en route, and returns via Ouarzazate and the Tizi n’Tichka. Against the Merzouga circuits: fewer crowds, rawer desert, gentler price. November-to-March nights are cold and spectacular — pack layers. Travellers already in Zagora join a day in; the written day-by-day quote arrives within the hour on WhatsApp.

Erg Chigaga is the Sahara without the crowd: Morocco’s wildest great dune field, reached off-road beyond M’Hamid where the tarmac gives up. Four days from Marrakech: Aït Ben Haddou and the Draa’s million palms, Tamegroute’s ancient Koranic library and green pottery, the 4×4 run to the dunes with a sunset camel ride and a private camp night, then two nights in a Draa-valley kasbah wrapping the desert in oasis life. Private throughout — never in a group.

Chigaga vs Chebbi in one line: Chebbi is taller and easier to reach; Chigaga is emptier and earns its silence with an off-road hour — the full comparison lives in the four-deserts guide and the desert FAQ.
Choosing between Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi is the classic Morocco desert question, and this tour is the answer for travellers who want emptiness: Chigaga’s dunes see a fraction of Merzouga’s visitors because the last hour is genuine off-road — no tarmac, no coach parking, no queue of camps. What you trade for that is comfort en route; what you get is a horizon of sand with almost nobody on it.
The four days stack the south’s essentials around the erg: Aït Ben Haddou, the Draa valley’s million palms, Tamegroute’s Koranic library and green pottery, the 4×4 run beyond M’Hamid to the dunes with a sunset camel ride and a private camp night, then two kasbah nights wrapping the desert in oasis life. From €379 per person, private throughout.
Book it if you have slept in a desert camp before and want the wilder version, or if crowds are the thing you travel to avoid. Dates on WhatsApp — the full day-by-day quote comes back within the hour.
How you reach Erg Chigaga matters: every route funnels through M’Hamid, where the tarmac ends and the last hour runs off-road. This 4-day circuit handles the whole chain from Marrakech; travellers already in Zagora join the route a day in; and from Agadir or elsewhere we shape it as a tailor-made itinerary — send your starting point on WhatsApp.
Open a day to see the detail: transport, accommodation, meals and activity time.
Over the Tichka to the UNESCO ksar, Ouarzazate's Taourirt kasbah, then into the Draa — night at a kasbah in Tamnougalt with a village walk.
Down Morocco's greatest palm valley; Tamegroute's 16th-century Koranic library and green-glazed pottery; then off-road beyond M'Hamid to Erg Chigaga — sunset camel ride, tagine dinner, Berber music and a night in the sands.
Desert sunrise, the 4×4 run back, and the Draa's best stretch — Tizgui falls tea break if time allows, and a second kasbah night in the valley.
The Tizi n'Tnifift pass through the Aït Saoun mountains, lunch option with a Berber family near Ouarzazate, and the Tichka home.
The last hour to Chigaga is genuine off-road — part of the point. Per-person prices by group size in the grid above.

South and east of the Atlas mountains. The named destinations, in order of distance from Marrakech: the Agafay stone desert 45 minutes away (no sand dunes), the Zagora dunes down the Draa valley at 360 km, Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid where the tarmac ends, and the great Erg Chebbi dune sea at Merzouga, 560 km out — the Sahara of the photographs.
Broadly, everything south and east of the Atlas watershed is arid or Saharan — roughly half the country by area. The photogenic sand seas are actually small pockets of that expanse: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are each a day's drive apart, islands of dunes in a vast landscape of stone, oases and kasbah valleys.
Layers, always: desert days can hit 30°C while nights drop near freezing outside summer. The working formula is light long sleeves and trousers for sun and camels, a warm fleece or jacket for the camp evening, closed shoes for sand and stones, sunglasses, and a scarf (a cheche) — bought in any souk for a few dirhams — for sun, wind and the photograph. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you carry a small overnight bag to the camp.
The honest ladder: the Agafay stone desert is 45 minutes away (no sand dunes, but real desert scenery); the first true Sahara dunes at Zagora are 360 km — about 6 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka; the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are 560 km — 8 to 9 hours, which is why serious itineraries take 3–4 days. There is no Sahara 'day trip' from Marrakech worth the name — anyone selling one is selling Agafay.
