Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, Morocco's tallest dune sea — waves of orange sand rising up to ~150 metres near the Algerian border, 560 km from Marrakech. It is the desert of the postcards: sunset camel caravans, nights in tented camps, Gnaoua music in Khamlia. Our 4-day private circuit from Marrakech starts at €600 per person.

The great dunes — 150 metres of orange sand, camel caravans at sunset and camps under a ceiling of stars. Worth the road, if you give it the days it deserves.
What to see and do
- Ride a camel into the dunes at sunset and sleep at a desert camp under the stars

- 4×4 safari around the erg: Khamlia's Gnaoua musicians, nomad families, the fossil beds
- Sandboarding down the big slopes (boards provided at most camps)
- Rissani market and its mausoleum — the old caravan capital 35 minutes away

Questions travellers ask about Merzouga & Erg Chebbi
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
About 560 km — 8 to 9 hours of driving over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. That is why serious itineraries give it 4 days: the road itself (Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges) is half the experience. From €600 per person, private.
Merzouga or Zagora — which desert should I choose?
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has the giant dunes and needs 4 days from Marrakech. Zagora's dunes are smaller but reachable in a 2-day trip (€300 per person). Rule of thumb: short on time, Zagora; chasing the postcard Sahara, Merzouga; wanting emptiness, Erg Chigaga.
What should I pack for the desert?
Layers — desert nights are cold even when days are hot — plus a scarf for sand, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a headlamp for the camp. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you carry a small overnight bag to the tents by camel.
