What is a desert camp actually like?

Our standard is the luxury ensuite camp: a proper bed with linen, a private bathroom with hot shower, rugs, lanterns, dinner served at camp and music by the fire. It is under canvas and off-grid — but closer to a small hotel in the dunes than to camping.

How long is the camel ride, and is it hard?

About an hour into the dunes at sunset, at walking pace with a handler leading — no experience needed, and children love it. If camels are not for you, a 4×4 transfer to the same camp takes minutes; just tell us.

How cold does the desert get at night?

Accepted Answer

Colder than anyone expects: near freezing on December–February nights, and a sharp drop after sunset in any season. Camps provide thick blankets; you provide a warm layer and something for your head.

Erg Chebbi or Zagora — which desert should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is the great dune sea — 150-metre dunes and the classic Sahara picture — but it is a long drive. Zagora's dunes are smaller and a day closer to Marrakech, ideal for 2-day tasters and young children. Our tour pages say clearly which one each route visits.

Is there electricity and phone signal at the camp?

Camps run on solar: lights yes, hairdryers no, and charging is limited to a shared strip for phones. Signal at the Erg Chebbi camps ranges from decent to blissfully absent. Charge everything in the hotel the night before and enjoy the outage.

What should I pack for the desert stage?

A warm layer, closed shoes for the sand at night, a scarf (sun and wind — the classic chech is sold everywhere and works), sunscreen, a headtorch, and your camera charged. Leave the big suitcase in the vehicle; a small overnight bag goes to camp.

Can children sleep at the desert camp?

Absolutely — the camp night is consistently the part kids talk about for years. Family tents sleep parents and children together, camel handlers are endlessly patient, and for under-sixes we usually recommend the shorter Zagora version.

Question 8

What is there to do besides the camel ride?

Accepted Answer

Sandboarding on the big slopes, 4×4 dune runs, gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, tea with nomad families, fossil workshops near Erfoud — and the two performances no one skips: sunset and dawn from a dune crest.
