Mule paths, Berber villages and North Africa's highest summit.
Home  ›  Travel styles  ›  Hiking in Morocco

A private hiking trip in Morocco costs from €300 per person for a 2-day Atlas valleys walk and from €345 for the 5-day Toubkal summit and desert trek. Every trek is private — your own licensed mountain guide and mule support, never a mixed group — from gentle village-to-village days to North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 m.

Why walk here

The High Atlas rises to 4,167 metres less than two hours from Marrakech, and its valleys are laced with mule paths that have linked Berber villages for a thousand years. Our walking circuits range from gentle village-to-village afternoons to the summit of Toubkal itself — always with licensed mountain guides, and always ending somewhere with mint tea.

Real mountains

The High Atlas rises two hours from Marrakech — snow peaks, gorges and valley after valley of trails.

Licensed guides

Every trek runs with a licensed mountain guide and mule support; the vehicle is never far.

Living culture

You walk between working villages and eat at family tables — the trail is somebody's front path.

Your level, honestly

From three-hour valley walks to the Toubkal summit — the route bends to your legs, both ways.

The walks worth flying for

Morocco's trails deliver the rare combination of real mountains and living culture: you walk between working villages, eat lunch at family tables, and sleep in gîtes and kasbahs rather than huts. And because the Sahara is just over the watershed, one week can hold both a summit and a dune.

Hiking in Morocco

On the road

  • Summit Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, over two days
  • Hike the Akchour waterfalls in the Rif below Chefchaouen
  • Walk village-to-village in the Amizmiz and Ourika foothills
  • Trek between mudbrick hamlets in the Dades valley
  • Cross a dune field on foot at dawn, before the heat rises

When to go

Spring and autumn are prime: snow-free passes, green valleys and cool air. Toubkal is at its most forgiving from May to October; winter ascents need crampons and a conversation with us first. Summer trekking stays pleasant above 2,000 metres.

Travel tips

Trekking questions, answered

How fit do I need to be to hike in Morocco?

Honest answer: it depends on the route, and we grade honestly. Valley walks suit anyone who can manage a few hours on foot; the Toubkal summit needs solid fitness — two long days with 1,400 m of ascent to the refuge and a pre-dawn summit push — but no technical climbing outside winter.

Are your treks private or in a group?

Private only — we never mix you into a group. Your own licensed mountain guide sets the pace to your legs, and mules carry the bags on trekking stages, so you walk with a daypack.

Can I climb Toubkal with no mountaineering experience?

Yes, in the snow-free season (roughly May to October) it is a strenuous walk, not a climb. In winter, crampons and an ice axe are required and we only run it with the right conditions and equipment. Either way you sleep at the refuge and summit at dawn.

What is the best season for hiking in Morocco?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal in the High Atlas: clear trails, moderate temperatures. Summer works at altitude — the valleys stay cooler than the cities — and winter turns Toubkal into a proper alpine objective.

What's included on a trekking stage?

Your licensed mountain guide, mule support for luggage, nights in mountain gîtes or the refuge, and meals on the trail. We handle the transfers from Marrakech, so the trip is door-to-trailhead-to-door.
