4×4 desert tours in Morocco

Every desert tour we run is by private 4×4 — Toyota Prado TX class, your own driver-guide, never a group. The true off-road flagship is the Erg Chigaga circuit (from €379): the last hour to the dunes has no tarmac at all. Elsewhere the 4×4 buys comfort, dune-edge access and the freedom to leave the road when a piste looks better — with day hire of a chauffeured Prado from €250 for expeditions you design yourself.

Why the vehicle changes the desert

On tarmac, everyone sees the same Morocco. The 4×4 is where itineraries fork: the piste short-cuts between kasbah valleys, the run beyond M'Hamid where Erg Chigaga hides its dunes from coaches, the dune-edge camps a van can't reach, the nomad tents a detour away. Our fleet runs Toyota Prado TX and Land Cruiser class — air-conditioned, desert-serviced, driven by chauffeur-guides who grew up on these pistes — the same vehicles that carry our transport division's delegations. This page gathers the routes where four driven wheels earn their keep; for the full catalogue of desert journeys by destination, the breadcrumb above leads to our desert tours collection.

What the 4×4 unlocks

The difference is not speed — it is permission. A 4×4 with a driver who knows the ground is allowed everywhere the map goes quiet: the last roadless hour to Chigaga, the oued crossings after rain, the high piste from Telouet to Aït Ben Haddou along the old caravan ledge, the dune-base camps where vans park a kilometre short. You stop where the photograph is, not where the asphalt ends.

4×4 desert tours in Morocco

On the road

  • Cross the last 60 roadless kilometres to Erg Chigaga — the Sahara with nobody in it
  • Take the Telouet–Aït Ben Haddou piste: the caravan back-road the buses can't
  • Ride dune-edge to a camp with the luggage in the back, not on a camel
  • Detour to a nomad tent for tea because the driver knows the family
  • Sandboard, then let the Prado climb the next ridge for the view

When to go

October to April for the deep-desert pistes; after summer storms some oued crossings close for a day — our drivers reroute by radio. Midsummer off-road runs start at dawn and rest at midday, like everyone sensible in the Sahara.

Travel tips

4×4 questions, answered

Do you really need a 4×4 for the Moroccan desert?

For Merzouga, honestly, tarmac now reaches the dunes — the 4×4 there buys comfort, dune-edge camps and freedom to detour. For Erg Chigaga the answer is absolute: the last stretch beyond M'Hamid is roadless by nature, and only a driven 4×4 gets you to the wild erg at all.

Can I drive the 4×4 myself?

Our formula is chauffeur-driven — Moroccan tourist-transport law licenses the vehicle with its professional driver, and on the pistes that licence comes with something better: a driver who reads soft sand, oued crossings and unmarked forks as a first language. You get the front seat and the landscape; he gets the tyre pressures.

Which vehicles do you run?

Toyota Prado TX and Land Cruiser class — the Sahara's reference machines — air-conditioned, serviced for desert work, presented clean at pickup. The same fleet serves our VIP transport division, which tells you how they're maintained.

Chigaga or Chebbi for a 4×4 trip?

Chigaga IS the 4×4 trip: the approach is the adventure, the erg is wild and camp lights are few. Chebbi (Merzouga) has the tallest dunes and the classic camps, with the 4×4 as comfort rather than necessity. Purists do Chigaga; first-timers usually choose Chebbi; ten days does both.

Is off-road driving in the Sahara safe?

With professionals, yes — our drivers grew up on these routes, run known pistes rather than dune-bashing stunts, carry water, comms and spares, and travel linked with other crews by phone and habit. The cowboy stuff you've seen on video is a different industry; we're the one delegations use.
