The great diagonal done properly in four days: over the Tizi n’Tichka to UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, nights in the Skoura oasis and a desert camp at Erg Chebbi, a half-day 4×4 safari with Gnaoua music in Khamlia and tea with a nomad family — ending in Fes with the whole south behind you. Private vehicle and driver throughout, never in a group.

Sunset and sunrise camel rides at the dunes are included, as is the 4×4 exploration day — the difference between crossing the desert and actually meeting it. The route in the opposite direction is here; desert-night questions live in the desert FAQ.
The mirror of our Fes-to-Marrakech crossing, for trips running the other way: out of Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou and the Skoura palm grove, then the Valley of Roses, the Dades and the Todra Gorge to Merzouga for sunset over Erg Chebbi. Day three is all desert — sunrise camels, a 4×4 safari, tea with a nomad family — before the camp night in the dunes and the run north to Fes through the Ziz valley and the cedar forest. From €370 per person, private throughout.
Choosing the direction matters more than people expect: this way round, the desert sits at the heart of the trip rather than the start, and you land in Fes exactly where a guided medina day makes the best finale. Both nights at the dunes — riad first, camp second — face the sand.
It is the standard bridge between a Marrakech arrival and a Fes departure, and the tour we suggest when someone asks how to see the Sahara between the two cities without backtracking. Dates on WhatsApp; the day-by-day quote, hotels named, comes back within the hour.
Who this tour is for: travellers starting in Marrakech and continuing to Fes — the Sahara en route instead of a wasted transfer day. The Fes-to-Marrakech version runs the same crossing in reverse. For a slower crossing with more oasis time, the 5-day Fes to Marrakech Tour adds breathing room; for wilder dunes, Erg Chigaga is the connoisseur’s pick.

Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) to the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate's Taourirt kasbah, and a first night among the palms and kasbahs of Skoura.
Through the Valley of Roses (cosmetics cooperative stop) and the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, Tinghir's palm grove and the Todra Gorges, reaching Merzouga for sunset — night in a riad at the dunes' edge.
Sunrise camel ride, then a half-day 4×4 safari: Khamlia's Gnaoua musicians, tea with a nomad family, free time for sandboarding — and at golden hour, camels into Erg Chebbi for dinner, fire and a night at the desert camp.
North through the Ziz palm canyon and Midelt, the Azrou cedar forest and its Barbary macaques, alpine Ifrane — arriving in Fes by evening.
Prices are per person by group size — the grid above is exact. The luxury camp option adds €50 per person for ensuite comfort at the dunes.

South and east of the Atlas mountains. The named destinations, in order of distance from Marrakech: the Agafay stone desert 45 minutes away (no sand dunes), the Zagora dunes down the Draa valley at 360 km, Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid where the tarmac ends, and the great Erg Chebbi dune sea at Merzouga, 560 km out — the Sahara of the photographs.
Broadly, everything south and east of the Atlas watershed is arid or Saharan — roughly half the country by area. The photogenic sand seas are actually small pockets of that expanse: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are each a day's drive apart, islands of dunes in a vast landscape of stone, oases and kasbah valleys.
Layers, always: desert days can hit 30°C while nights drop near freezing outside summer. The working formula is light long sleeves and trousers for sun and camels, a warm fleece or jacket for the camp evening, closed shoes for sand and stones, sunglasses, and a scarf (a cheche) — bought in any souk for a few dirhams — for sun, wind and the photograph. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you carry a small overnight bag to the camp.
The honest ladder: the Agafay stone desert is 45 minutes away (no sand dunes, but real desert scenery); the first true Sahara dunes at Zagora are 360 km — about 6 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka; the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are 560 km — 8 to 9 hours, which is why serious itineraries take 3–4 days. There is no Sahara 'day trip' from Marrakech worth the name — anyone selling one is selling Agafay.
