The 11-day Erg Chigaga immersive tour costs from $4100 per person — riads, a boutique hotel in the Skoura oasis, a luxury desert camp, a guesthouse facing Aït Benhaddou and seafront Essaouira nights, with your own 4×4 and driver-guide for eleven days. Chigaga is the connoisseur’s Sahara: Morocco’s largest dune field, an hour off-road beyond the last tarmac at M’Hamid, with no town at its edge. This route refuses to rush the approach — two nights among Skoura’s palms, the Draa Valley’s date palmeries and the ancient ksar of Tamnougalt on the way in, a sunset camel ride into the glamping night at the heart, then the ksar and the Atlantic to decompress, with an award-winning Moroccan winery on the return. Eleven days is what the wild desert costs without shortcuts. Written quote within the hour on WhatsApp.

Chigaga is the connoisseur’s Sahara. Merzouga’s great dunes come with a town at their feet; Chigaga comes with nothing but the erg. Getting there properly takes the Draa Valley’s date palmeries and the ksar of Tamnougalt, and this route refuses to rush the approach: two nights among Skoura’s palms first, the glamping night at the heart, then the ksar and the ocean to decompress. Eleven days is what the wild desert costs when you do it without shortcuts.
Against our 4-day Chigaga tour: same dunes, different philosophy. The 4-day is the fastest honest route to the wild erg; this 11-day version is the full southern arc — oasis, desert, ksar and coast — for travellers who want the Sahara inside a complete Morocco.
Open a day to see the detail: transport, accommodation, meals and activity time.
Arrival beneath the Atlas foothills and transfer to your riad. The medina — UNESCO-listed since 1985 — is yours to wander for the rest of the day, no agenda, just bearings.
A full guided walking day paced by the call to prayer: the painted chambers of the Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia and its gardens, and the great squares where the city's thousand years stack up in plain sight.

A free day for the medina and the open-air produce markets — or the optional cooking class, which turns the morning's market walk into lunch.

Over the High Atlas with a guided stop at Morocco's highest waterfall, where the Oued Tissakht plunges into its massive gorge. The day ends among the palms of Skoura, at a boutique hotel inside the oasis.
Choose your Skoura: an excursion into the Dades Gorges and the nomad heritage of the Boutaghrar cave country, or the 17th-century Amehidil kasbah next door with a local guide — one of the finest pieces of earthen architecture in the south.

South through the date palmeries of the Draa with a stop at the ancient ksar of Tamnougalt, then off the tarmac to Erg Chigaga — Morocco's largest dune field. A sunset camel ride carries you into the colour shift, and the night is glamping under a Saharan sky.

Breakfast with the dunes still pink, then the scenic transfer north past clay castles, the Atlas and the Ounila Valley to the fortified ksar of Aït Benhaddou. The evening is the ksar at its emptiest and best.

From the Ounila Valley to the Atlantic, with kasbah and palace stops on the way if they tempt you, arriving at seafront accommodation in Essaouira.

A day of choices: the medina on foot with its fresh-fish market, or Sidi Kaouki beach for horseback riding, a quad excursion or water sports in the famous wind.
The return to Marrakech allows one last detour: an authentic Moroccan winery with award-winning vintages, for those surprised to learn the country has them. Hotel by mid-afternoon, evening free.
A final drift through the medina lanes for photographs and last souvenirs, then breakfast and the transfer to Marrakech airport.
Chigaga is the desert for people who found Merzouga on the map and wondered what lies beyond the hotels: Morocco's largest erg, reached off-road, with no town at its edge. The eleven-day shape surrounds that wild night with slow country — two oasis nights in Skoura, a ksar evening at Aït Benhaddou, two Atlantic days in Essaouira — so the Sahara lands as a chapter, not a stunt. November to March nights are cold at the camp; pack accordingly.

South and east of the Atlas mountains. The named destinations, in order of distance from Marrakech: the Agafay stone desert 45 minutes away (no sand dunes), the Zagora dunes down the Draa valley at 360 km, Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid where the tarmac ends, and the great Erg Chebbi dune sea at Merzouga, 560 km out — the Sahara of the photographs.
Broadly, everything south and east of the Atlas watershed is arid or Saharan — roughly half the country by area. The photogenic sand seas are actually small pockets of that expanse: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are each a day's drive apart, islands of dunes in a vast landscape of stone, oases and kasbah valleys.
Layers, always: desert days can hit 30°C while nights drop near freezing outside summer. The working formula is light long sleeves and trousers for sun and camels, a warm fleece or jacket for the camp evening, closed shoes for sand and stones, sunglasses, and a scarf (a cheche) — bought in any souk for a few dirhams — for sun, wind and the photograph. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you carry a small overnight bag to the camp.
The honest ladder: the Agafay stone desert is 45 minutes away (no sand dunes, but real desert scenery); the first true Sahara dunes at Zagora are 360 km — about 6 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka; the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are 560 km — 8 to 9 hours, which is why serious itineraries take 3–4 days. There is no Sahara 'day trip' from Marrakech worth the name — anyone selling one is selling Agafay.
