Day 1 Tangier city tour and the road to Fes
Your private driver meets you at Tangier port or airport for a guided turn through the Kasbah and old medina before the road south. En route: the Roman city of Volubilis (UNESCO) and Meknes's monumental Bab Mansour gate. Fes by evening, and a riad bed well earned.
Day 2 A full day inside the Fes medina
An expert local guide leads you deep into Fes el-Bali — the world's largest car-free medina: the Chouara tannery in full colour, the 9th-century Al-Qarawiyyin, the Royal Palace's ornate doors, and the artisan lanes between them.
Day 3 Fes to Merzouga — into the Sahara
Through the Middle Atlas and across the sun-baked plains to Merzouga, arriving in the golden hour. A camel carries you into the Erg Chebbi for sunset, then the luxury camp: traditional dinner, campfire and live Berber music under a blazing sky.
Day 4 Sahara sunrise to the Dades
Up before dawn for the sunrise over the dunes and a Berber breakfast, then west to the Todra Gorge — 300-metre limestone walls over a clear river, with a short canyon walk — and on through the lush Dades Valley to a mountain guesthouse.
Day 5 The kasbah road: Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate
Along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs past mud-brick fortresses to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO ksar of Gladiator fame, guided properly. Then the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate — Africa's Hollywood — before your hotel for the evening.
Day 6 Over the Tichka to Marrakech
The Tizi n'Tichka pass carries you over the High Atlas and down into Marrakech, with drop-off at Menara airport or your hotel — the Strait of Gibraltar to the Red City complete, without a single backtracked kilometre.
The one-way geometry is the point: ferry or fly into Tangier — often straight from a Spain trip — and fly home from Marrakech, having crossed the whole country without repeating a road. Six days keeps one honest long leg (Fes to the dunes); every other day stays under five hours of driving.

How much of Morocco is desert?+
Broadly, everything south and east of the Atlas watershed is arid or Saharan — roughly half the country by area. The photogenic sand seas are actually small pockets of that expanse: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are each a day's drive apart, islands of dunes in a vast landscape of stone, oases and kasbah valleys.
What should I wear on a Morocco desert tour?+
Layers, always: desert days can hit 30°C while nights drop near freezing outside summer. The working formula is light long sleeves and trousers for sun and camels, a warm fleece or jacket for the camp evening, closed shoes for sand and stones, sunglasses, and a scarf (a cheche) — bought in any souk for a few dirhams — for sun, wind and the photograph. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you carry a small overnight bag to the camp.
How far is the Sahara desert from Marrakech?+
The honest ladder: the Agafay stone desert is 45 minutes away (no sand dunes, but real desert scenery); the first true Sahara dunes at Zagora are 360 km — about 6 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka; the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are 560 km — 8 to 9 hours, which is why serious itineraries take 3–4 days. There is no Sahara 'day trip' from Marrakech worth the name — anyone selling one is selling Agafay.
