Private departures only — never in a group

Sahara Deep Silence is a 6-day private writing retreat built around one structural heresy: two fixed nights in the same desert camp at Erg Chigaga, from €900 per person — full board at the erg, a Skoura oasis night on the way in, a Draa valley kasbah and a Marrakech riad on the way out, with your own 4×4 and driver throughout. Every other desert itinerary moves each night; this one stops, and the stopping is the product: day three has no vehicle, no packing and no destination — a full working day facing the largest dune field in Morocco, an hour off-road beyond the last tarmac, where the silence is not a brochure word but a physical fact. No tutor and no programme; the desert is the workshop. Camel ride at sunset optional, lantern and camp table reserved for the pages. The written quote, every night named, arrives within the hour on WhatsApp.

Writers have used deserts as instruments for as long as both have existed, and Chigaga is the Moroccan erg that still works as one: no town at its edge, no generator hum from a neighbouring camp row, nights cold and star-flooded from November to March. The route’s decompression is engineered — oasis, then erg, then valley — so the stillness lands gradually and leaves the same way.

Against our other formats: the 4-day Chigaga tour reaches the same dunes faster and moves on; the Writer’s Silence (7 days) trades the deep erg for the Atlas and three landscapes. This is the maximalist stillness — the one for the manuscript that needs a locked door made of distance.

  • The differentiator — TWO nights in the SAME Chigaga camp — the desert, unmoving
  • Full writing days facing the largest erg in Morocco
  • A Skoura oasis night to decompress on the way in
  • The Draa valley's palms and kasbahs on the way out
  • No neighbours — Chigaga sits an hour off-road beyond the last tarmac
  • Mornings of pages, evenings of fire, nights of nothing but sky

Itinerary

Day 1 Marrakech to the Skoura oasis 3 stages

The Tizi n'Tichka in morning light — this route's one early start, spent on the most beautiful road in the country — then the palm groves of Skoura and a guesthouse inside the oasis. First pages under the palms; the desert waits one more day on purpose.

Day 2 The Draa to the wild erg 4 stages

South through the Draa's hundred kilometres of palms, past Tamnougalt's ksar, to M'Hamid — where the tarmac ends — and the final hour off-road to Erg Chigaga. Camels at sunset if you want them; the camp table and lantern are yours either way.

Day 3 The still day 1 stages

The itinerary's whole argument: nothing. No vehicle, no packing, no destination — a full day at the erg with the dunes for a view and the pages for company. Walk the crests at dawn, write through the morning, sleep through the heat, write through the gold hour, dine by fire. Repeat none of it tomorrow, because tomorrow is already here.

Day 4 Out through the Draa 2 stages

Back across the off-road hour and up the valley to a kasbah guesthouse among the palms — a half-day transfer, afternoon pages in the garden, and the particular pleasure of hot water after two desert nights.

Day 5 The Draa to Marrakech 3 stages

Over the Tizi-n-Tinififft and the Tichka back to the Red City, arriving by evening. A riad night to land in — and, in our experience, the trip's most productive notebook session happens on this drive.

Day 6 Departure 1 stages

An unhurried morning and your transfer — airport or onward riad. The word count is your own business; the silence was ours.

Good to know

Every other desert itinerary moves each night; this one stops — and the stopping is the product. Two fixed nights at the same Chigaga camp mean one full day with no vehicle, no packing and no destination: the rarest commodity in desert travel. Chigaga is reached an hour off-road beyond M'Hamid, which is precisely why the silence holds. November-to-March nights are cold and magnificent; bring layers and a headlamp for the pages after dark. No tutor, no programme — the desert is the workshop.

Questions travellers ask

How much does Sahara Deep Silence – 6 Days: Two Fixed Nights at the Wild Erg cost?+

From €900 per person, per person. The price includes private air-conditioned 4×4 with english/french-speaking driver — 6 days, pickup and drop-off in marrakech, night 1: boutique guesthouse in the skoura oasis — half-board. You receive a written itemised quote before paying anything — no hidden fees.

How long is this tour and when does it depart?+

6 Days, departing on the dates you choose — there is no fixed schedule, because every departure is arranged for you alone.

Is this a group tour or private?+

Fully private: your own vehicle, driver and licensed guide, never seat-in-coach and never mixed with other travellers. The daily pace flexes around you.

Where is the desert in Morocco?+

South and east of the Atlas mountains. The named destinations, in order of distance from Marrakech: the Agafay stone desert 45 minutes away (no sand dunes), the Zagora dunes down the Draa valley at 360 km, Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid where the tarmac ends, and the great Erg Chebbi dune sea at Merzouga, 560 km out — the Sahara of the photographs.

How much of Morocco is desert?+

Broadly, everything south and east of the Atlas watershed is arid or Saharan — roughly half the country by area. The photogenic sand seas are actually small pockets of that expanse: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga are each a day's drive apart, islands of dunes in a vast landscape of stone, oases and kasbah valleys.

What should I wear on a Morocco desert tour?+

Layers, always: desert days can hit 30°C while nights drop near freezing outside summer. The working formula is light long sleeves and trousers for sun and camels, a warm fleece or jacket for the camp evening, closed shoes for sand and stones, sunglasses, and a scarf (a cheche) — bought in any souk for a few dirhams — for sun, wind and the photograph. Luggage stays in the vehicle; you carry a small overnight bag to the camp.

How far is the Sahara desert from Marrakech?+

The honest ladder: the Agafay stone desert is 45 minutes away (no sand dunes, but real desert scenery); the first true Sahara dunes at Zagora are 360 km — about 6 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka; the great Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are 560 km — 8 to 9 hours, which is why serious itineraries take 3–4 days. There is no Sahara 'day trip' from Marrakech worth the name — anyone selling one is selling Agafay.
