Fes is the desert’s other doorway — closer to the Erg Chebbi than Marrakech is, with a mountain approach so different it feels like another country. If your trip touches Fes, the desert should leave from here. The options, laid out.
Why the Fes approach is special
The road south crosses the Middle Atlas: cedar forests with wild Barbary macaques, alpine Ifrane’s storybook roofs, then the long unveiling as oak gives way to palms at Errachidia and the Ziz valley’s million-palm gorge. Marrakech’s approach is kasbah drama; Fes’s is a slow ecological reveal — many drivers privately prefer it.
The route shapes
The crossing (our strong recommendation): Fes → Erg Chebbi → the gorges → Marrakech, no road repeated — 5 days from €750, or the 6-day unhurried version (from €900). The return loop: possible for Fes-based trips, but you drive the Middle Atlas twice — spend the saved logistics on a second desert night instead.
Timing the run
Fes to Merzouga is a solid seven-to-eight-hour day with the good stops — Ifrane’s monkeys, the Ziz viewpoint, lunch in Midelt. Leave by 8am and the camels still get their sunset. October to April, as ever, is the golden season.
