Most itineraries treat Merzouga as one sunset and one sunrise. Give it a full day and the village at the foot of the Erg Chebbi turns out to hold a small world. Here is what fills it, tested in every season.
In the dunes
The classics first: the sunset camel trek and the dawn climb — then the underrated ones. Sandboarding down the big faces (boards live at the camps). A 4×4 run around the erg’s rim, where the dunes meet black hamada like a coastline. And an hour of doing absolutely nothing on a crest, which sounds like filler and becomes the memory.
Around the villages
Khamlia, ten minutes south, is the Gnawa village — descendants of Saharan caravans keeping trance rhythms alive; the tea-and-music visit is genuine, not staged. The nomad family tea stop on the erg’s far side shows desert life as lived. Birdwatchers detour to Dayet Srji, the seasonal lake that — improbably — draws flamingos after wet winters.
