Between the desert and the High Atlas runs a valley that would headline any other country’s tourism board — in Morocco it is merely the road between. The Dades deserves better billing. Here is why our drivers slow down here without being asked.
What the valley holds
Ochre gorge walls that tighten to the famous hairpin switchbacks (yes, the ones from every Morocco reel), rock formations locals call “monkey fingers” for their eroded knuckle shapes, and a floor of almond and fig gardens threaded with kasbahs in every state from ruin to restoration. In late February the almond blossom turns the whole corridor pink.
Doing it properly
The mistake is treating the Dades as a lunch stop between Merzouga and Marrakech. The right version: sleep in the gorge — evening light on the walls, dinner overlooking the gardens, and the switchbacks climbed at golden hour for the photograph everyone wants. Then the Todra Gorge, forty minutes on, before the crowds.
Where it fits
The valley anchors day three of most desert circuits — the 4-day Erg Chebbi route (from €600) threads it eastbound, and the 5-day grand tour gives it the overnight it merits.
