The gold standard: Erg Chebbi at golden hour
Merzouga’s great erg is what the brochure promised — an hour’s swaying climb into 150-metre dunes as the light goes amber, camp appearing between crests, stars replacing everything. This is the ride that justifies the species (the overnight version, in full). Erg Chigaga beyond M’Hamid offers the wilder, emptier sibling.
The honourable middle: Zagora and the Agafay
Zagora’s dunes are smaller but only two days from Marrakech — the honest compromise our 2-day Zagora tour (from €300 per person) is built on.
