Erg Chebbi is the Sahara postcard made real: a sea of orange sand roughly 28 kilometres long and up to 7 wide, with crests rising around 150 metres above the black hamada plain — high enough that climbing one for sunrise counts as morning exercise. This is the dune field itself, explained.
What an erg actually is
“Erg” is the Arabic term for a dune sea — wind-built sand massed over millennia — and Chebbi is Morocco’s most dramatic: an island of pure dunes you can walk around in a day, marooned in stony desert near the Algerian border. Its sand runs deep amber and shifts colour hourly — pale gold at noon, apricot at five, ember-red in the last light, silver-blue under the moon. The colour show alone rewards a full 24 hours.
The rhythm of a dune day
Late afternoon is the classic entry — camels or 4×4 into the erg as the heat breaks, shadows carving the crests into sculpture. Night belongs to the sky (this is some of the darkest air in easy reach of Europe) and the camp drums. Then the pilgrimage: a pre-dawn scramble up the nearest big crest, coffee-warm sand underfoot, and a sunrise that silences every camera-first instinct. Between times, the small pleasures — sandboarding a face, watching beetles write calligraphy, the dune-crest walk where each summit reveals ten more.
Chebbi’s own surprises
Spring rains occasionally conjure Dayet Srij, a seasonal lake west of Merzouga that draws flamingos to the Sahara’s doorstep — a rumour worth checking in March and April. The erg’s edge villages (Merzouga, Hassilabied) run on tourism and khamlia’s Gnaoua musicians on something older; an hour at a khamlia performance adds a human register to the geology. And yes, the dunes migrate — slowly, grain by grain, which is why “the view” is never twice the same.
