South African travellers are discovering Morocco fast — same continent, opposite corner, and a genuinely different Africa. Here is the planning guide for the Jo’burg-to-Marrakech pipeline.
Getting there
No direct flights yet: the workable one-stops route through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Addis, landing at Casablanca or Marrakech in 14–18 hours door to door. Book the Gulf connections for the shortest layovers; the Addis routing often wins on price.

Entry for SA passports
South African citizens currently need a visa — obtainable through the Moroccan embassy in Pretoria or the e-visa channel where eligible. Allow a few weeks; once your tour is confirmed we supply the booking letter your application wants. (Rules move — verify officially before ticketing.)
When to come (inverted seasons!)
Your winter is our prime time: June–August in Morocco means hot inland but glorious coast and mountains, while SA’s summer holidays (December–January) land in our crisp, beautiful desert season. Both work — they are just different Moroccos.
What surprises SA travellers
How organised the tourism runs, how safe the cities feel at night, the absence of load-shedding jokes that land, and — universally — the food. Budget-wise, think Cape Town prices for meals, less for crafts, with the rand-dirham maths currently friendly.
The route we recommend first
Ten days: Casablanca in, the imperial cities, two desert nights, out via Marrakech — our 10-day grand tour exactly. Tailor it on plan your journey with your flight dates and we do the rest.
Tarik Ziani — Tarik builds itineraries. Give him a number of days and an arrival airport and he will fight for every hour of it — fewer hotels, better sequencing, drives placed where the scenery earns them. His route pieces are the skeleton of many of our circuits, and they share a conviction: a good Morocco itinerary is measured in moments per day, not miles.
