Every list of Morocco “must-sees” swells to twenty entries because nobody dares cut. We dare. For a first trip, seven places carry the essential country — everything else is wonderful, but optional.

The seven

1. Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech — the nightly carnival that has run for a millennium; go at dusk. 2. Fes el-Bali — the medieval city still doing medieval city things; take a guide or surrender to being lost. 3. The Erg Chebbi dunes — the Sahara of your imagination, 150 metres of orange sand, one night minimum under canvas. 4. Aït Ben Haddou — earthen architecture’s greatest hit, best at dawn before the buses. 5. The Todra Gorge — 300-metre walls over a ribbon of palms. 6. Chefchaouen — a town as a single blue artwork. 7. Essaouira — trade winds, blue boats and the exhale your itinerary needs at the end.

Morocco's Must-Sees: The Honest Seven

The honest arithmetic

Numbers 1–5 string onto one southern loop; 6 belongs to the north; 7 anchors the coast. Doing all seven properly needs ten days or more — our 16-day grand tour collects the set without hurry. With one week, take the southern five via the 7-day imperial-and-Sahara route (from €1050) and save the north for the sequel.

What just missed the cut

Volubilis, the Majorelle garden, Meknes, the Dades valley, Rabat’s Oudayas — all worth your time, none worth panicking over. First trips are for the seven; the destinations index holds the rest for round two.

About the author

Tarik Ziani — Tarik builds itineraries. Give him a number of days and an arrival airport and he will fight for every hour of it — fewer hotels, better sequencing, drives placed where the scenery earns them. His route pieces are the skeleton of many of our circuits, and they share a conviction: a good Morocco itinerary is measured in moments per day, not miles.

Questions travellers ask

How long is the flight to Marrakech from the UK?+

About 3 and a half hours from London — Marrakech is closer to the UK than the Canary Islands. Direct routes also run from most major European cities, typically 2 to 4 hours, which is why Morocco works even for long weekends.

Are taxis in Marrakech safe?+

Yes — safety is not the issue; fares are. Petit taxis are everywhere and drivers are professional; the classic friction is an 'broken' meter or a tourist price. Insist politely on the meter or agree the fare before setting off, and short city hops should cost a few dozen dirhams.

How far is Marrakech from Casablanca?+

240 km — about 2 and a half hours by motorway, or around 2 h 40 by train with departures through the day. Most of our Casablanca-start circuits make the transfer part of day one, with the Hassan II Mosque visited before the road south.

How far is Marrakech from the other main cities?+

The distances that shape every itinerary: Casablanca 240 km (≈2h30 by motorway), Essaouira 190 km (2h45), Agadir 250 km (2h50), Rabat 330 km (3h15), Fes 530 km (5h15 via motorway), Tangier 580 km (5h30), Ouarzazate 200 km but 3h45 over the Atlas pass. Private transfers at fixed prices cover all of these — €200–450 per vehicle — and every figure above is drive time, not wishful thinking.
