The road from Marrakech to the Sahara is one of the great drives on earth — over the High Atlas, down the kasbah valleys, and out to where the dunes finally take over. Having driven it for years, here is exactly how it works and how to choose your version.
The two deserts
Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is the postcard: dunes to 150 metres, reached in a long, spectacular day via the Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges. Zagora is smaller sand but a day closer — the honest choice for 2-day schedules and small children. Both end the same way: camels at sunset, dinner by the fire, a sky with too many stars to process.

How many days do you need?
2 days reaches Zagora (one camp night). 3–4 days reaches Merzouga properly — our 4-day desert adventure is the shortest route we run to the big erg. 5+ days lets you add a second desert night or continue to Fes instead of backtracking.
What a good tour includes
Private 4×4 or minivan with driver-guide, an ensuite camp (real bed, hot shower), the camel trek, and honest driving times printed day by day — check any of our tour pages for the pattern. What it should never include: seat-in-bus crowds or a “desert” that is really a gravel lot.
When to go
October to April is prime; summer runs work with dawn starts and midday rest. The full details live in our desert experience FAQ — and if you want the desert plus mountains and coast in one loop, start with the desert tours collection.
Hassan Ait Brahim — Hassan writes our Sahara pages. He has crossed the Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga dunes in every season, including the ones we advise against, and his articles are built from that repetition: what a desert night actually feels like in January, how the camps differ, when the dunes hold their colour longest. He measures every itinerary against one question — is the drive worth what waits at the end of it.
