Every Fes-to-Sahara crossing has a moment when the driver slows without being asked: the first full view of the Ziz. A river of a million palms threading between ochre cliffs, oasis villages stacked along its banks — the valley is the desert road’s great reveal, and most travellers meet it unprepared.
Where it is and how you see it
The Ziz gorges begin south of Midelt, where the road tunnels through the rock and emerges above the palmery. The classic viewpoints come in quick succession — your driver knows the ones without the souvenir pressure — before the road descends to run beside the palms all the way toward Erfoud.
What life looks like in the valley
The palm groves are working farms: dates harvested in October (roadside stalls sell twenty varieties), alfalfa cut beneath the trees, ksour — fortified villages — guarding the banks as they have for centuries. A short walk into the groves at Aoufous or Zouala shows the three-storey agriculture: palms above, fruit trees below, vegetables at foot level.
