Casablanca to Chefchaouen is 460 kilometres of Morocco most visitors fly over — and three days turn that distance into a route: the Atlantic capital, the pirate republic’s kasbah, and a blue mountain town as the finale. Here is how the coast-to-Rif journey works best.
Day 1: Casablanca to Rabat — two capitals in one day
Morning at the Hassan II Mosque while the light comes off the ocean, then the short hop north (one hour) to Rabat for the afternoon: the Udayas kasbah’s blue lanes — a preview of what is coming — Chellah’s storks, dinner across the river in Salé if you like your history contrarian. Sleep in the capital’s calm.
Day 2: north through the green hills
The road leaves the motorway at Larache country and climbs into the Rif’s western skirts — about four hours of increasingly beautiful driving, with the worthwhile pause at Ouazzane, the olive-oil town pilgrims share with almost no tourists. Arrive Chefchaouen mid-afternoon: kasbah, plaza, and the Spanish mosque viewpoint for the blue hour.
Day 3: the blue morning and the way on
Dawn in the medina before the day-trips arrive is the entire argument for this route’s direction. Then choose your exit: two hours to Tangier for a ferry or flight, or south to Fes (3½ hours) to keep the trip growing — the route’s natural sequel.
