Morocco is one of the world’s great backpacking countries — cheap, dense with wonder, and connected by transport that actually works — and we say that as a company that sells the opposite product. Here is the honest independent-travel playbook, plus where even backpackers should spend.
The budget reality
Comfortable shoestring: hostel or basic riad beds, street-food feasts for pocket change, CTM/Supratours buses between cities and shared grand taxis for the gaps — a daily budget many European weekends would envy (the budget FAQ has numbers). Trains cover the Casablanca–Fes–Marrakech spine cheaply; everything else has a bus.
The route that teaches the country
The classic loop: Tangier in, Chefchaouen, Fes, a desert tour, Marrakech, Essaouira, out — a month done slowly, two weeks done briskly. Book beds a day ahead in season, guard the daypack in stations (scams list), and learn the Darija twenty — solo travellers report it repays itself hourly.
Where the shoestring should bend
Three spends that outperform their price even on a tight budget: a licensed guide for one Fes morning (the medina teaches itself badly), the desert done properly rather than the cheapest seat-in-van on offer — a cramped 3-day van tour is the most-regretted purchase in Moroccan backpacking — and one hammam. For the desert leg specifically, some independents pool into a private departure with us for the difference of a few street dinners: same dunes, your own schedule, real camp (from €300 per person).
The mindset
Say yes to tea, bargain with humour, keep a slack day per week for the invitation you cannot predict — the country rewards the unplanned traveller more than any itinerary admits (the essay on why).
