The day-by-day
Day 1 — Casablanca: land, see the Hassan II Mosque, sleep by the Atlantic. Day 2 — to Fes via Roman Volubilis and Meknes’s great gate. Day 3 — Fes: a full guided day in the medieval medina. Day 4 — the long beautiful road south over the Middle Atlas to Merzouga: camels at sunset, dinner by the fire, a Sahara camp night. Day 5 — dunes at dawn, then the Todra Gorge and kasbah valley to Ouarzazate. Day 6 — Aït Ben Haddou in morning light, the Tichka pass, Marrakech by evening. Day 7 — Marrakech guided, then home.
Why this order beats the alternatives
It runs open-jaw (in Casablanca, out Marrakech — no backtracking), puts the longest drive mid-trip when you are travel-fit, and lands the desert night exactly at the emotional centre. Reversed, it works equally well from Marrakech.
Honest expectations
Two long road days (6–7 h, broken by the best scenery in the country) buy you the real Erg Chebbi rather than a substitute. If that pace worries you, take nine days and breathe — same route, more nights.
