What to Pack for a Night in the Sahara

Home  ›  Guides  ›  What to Pack for a Night in the Sahara…

The camp has blankets and dinner. The rest fits in one small bag — if it is the right small bag.

The essentials

Closed shoes for sand and stone, a warm layer for the night (desert temperatures fall fast after sunset — down to 5 °C in winter), sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat for the day, and a scarf: the Sahara's one true multi-tool, against sun, wind and sand.

Small things that matter

A head torch — camps run on lamps, not floodlights. A power bank; the dunes have no sockets and your camera will be busy. Wet wipes and a small first-aid kit. Cash in dirhams: camps and villages do not take cards.

What to leave behind

Hard suitcases (a soft bag rides better in a 4×4), drones without permits (restricted in Morocco), and the fear of being cold at night — that is what the blankets, and the fire, are for.

One honest tip

Pack half of what you think you need and bring twice the memory card. The desert requires very little and photographs endlessly.
