Two names, two very different deserts. The honest trade-offs, from a team that drives both routes every week.
The difference in one paragraph
Zagora is the desert you can reach in one day from Marrakech: hammada and modest dunes, best as a 2-day taste with one unforgettable night in a camp. Merzouga is the postcard: the great Erg Chebbi dunes, 150 metres tall — but it honestly needs 3 to 4 days to be worth the road.
Choose Zagora if…
You have a weekend, not a week. You care more about the night — the fire, the silence, the stars — than about the height of the dunes. You are travelling with young children and want less driving.
Choose Merzouga if…
You want the dunes of your imagination and time to earn them: the Dadès and Todra gorges on the way out, sunrise over Erg Chebbi, the long road back through the Draa. Four days well spent rather than two days stretched.
Our answer when guests ask
If this is your only trip to Morocco and you have the days: Merzouga. If the desert is one chapter of a bigger trip: Zagora, done properly, will still be the night you talk about at dinner parties.
