Taroudant wears the crown for Moroccan city walls: more than seven kilometres of Saadian rampart, sixteenth-century, intact and unbroken, wrapping the Souss valley capital in tawny pisé that ignites at sunset. They call it Little Marrakech — same wall-and-souk formula, a tenth of the visitors — and the walls alone justify the affection.
The Saadians raised the circuit when Taroudant served as their staging capital for the reconquest of the coasts and the sugar wealth of the Souss: bastioned angles, five historic gates, and the kasbah quarter’s inner enclosure where Bab el-Kasbah — triple-arched under palms — makes the grandest entrance in the south.
The ritual is circumnavigation. Calèches wait at the squares for the classic wall loop (settle the fare with a smile beforehand); cyclists and walkers take the eastern and southern stretches where gardens lap the base and storks patrol the parapets. Late afternoon is law: the pisé goes from tan to amber to ember as the Anti-Atlas silhouettes behind.
Inside, the town rewards unhurried feet: souks arranged the old way — Berber silver of the Souss, saffron from Taliouine’s fields upvalley, argan everything, olives at heaps — trading at local pace for local wallets, with the Tuesday and Sunday country markets flooding the gates in douar traffic.
Everything essential is free; the pleasure is rhythm. Taroudant slots as the overnight on Tizi n’Test crossings, the inland day from Agadir (1 h 10), and our southern 15-day route.
