One week, one country, every register: ocean ramparts, red-city souks, High Atlas passes, Saharan dunes. The coast-to-desert seven is our answer when travellers say “we want it all and we have seven days” — here it is at honest pace.

Days 1–2: the Atlantic opening

Day 1, Essaouira: arrive via the argan coast, then ramparts, fishing port, gnaoua lanes — sea air as decompression chamber. Day 2: morning ride or surf lesson at Diabat, afternoon road to Marrakech through the goats-in-trees country.

Days 3–4: the red city

The guided medina day — Bahia, the souks’ logic, Jemaa el-Fna at lamplight — then a flexible second day: gardens and museums, a cooking class, or the sunrise balloon (from €190) before the mountains.

Days 5–7: over the Atlas, into the sand

Day 5: the Tichka pass and UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, sleeping in kasbah country. Day 6: the Draa valley’s palm river south to Zagora’s dunes — camels at golden hour, private camp, drums and the deepest sky you have owned. Day 7: desert dawn, then the long beautiful road home to Marrakech and the flight out.

The operator’s fine print

This geometry is our Marrakech, desert & Essaouira 7-day circuit (from €1050 per person) run in the direction your flights prefer; swapping Zagora for the bigger Merzouga erg needs the 10-day version (from €1500) to stay humane. Private car, driver and guides throughout — never a group. Pace and season questions live in the when-to-go FAQ.

About the author

Tarik Ziani — Tarik builds itineraries. Give him a number of days and an arrival airport and he will fight for every hour of it — fewer hotels, better sequencing, drives placed where the scenery earns them. His route pieces are the skeleton of many of our circuits, and they share a conviction: a good Morocco itinerary is measured in moments per day, not miles.

Questions travellers ask

How long is the flight to Marrakech from the UK?+

About 3 and a half hours from London — Marrakech is closer to the UK than the Canary Islands. Direct routes also run from most major European cities, typically 2 to 4 hours, which is why Morocco works even for long weekends.

Are taxis in Marrakech safe?+

Yes — safety is not the issue; fares are. Petit taxis are everywhere and drivers are professional; the classic friction is an 'broken' meter or a tourist price. Insist politely on the meter or agree the fare before setting off, and short city hops should cost a few dozen dirhams.

How far is Marrakech from Casablanca?+

240 km — about 2 and a half hours by motorway, or around 2 h 40 by train with departures through the day. Most of our Casablanca-start circuits make the transfer part of day one, with the Hassan II Mosque visited before the road south.

How far is Marrakech from the other main cities?+

The distances that shape every itinerary: Casablanca 240 km (≈2h30 by motorway), Essaouira 190 km (2h45), Agadir 250 km (2h50), Rabat 330 km (3h15), Fes 530 km (5h15 via motorway), Tangier 580 km (5h30), Ouarzazate 200 km but 3h45 over the Atlas pass. Private transfers at fixed prices cover all of these — €200–450 per vehicle — and every figure above is drive time, not wishful thinking.
