Why is Ifrane called Morocco's Switzerland?

Built by the French in the 1930s as a hill station, Ifrane does chalets, steep roofs, storks and rose gardens at 1,665 m — and holds Morocco's record low temperature. It is a surreal half-hour stop on the Fes–Sahara road: photograph the famous stone lion, buy cherries in season, and enjoy the double-take.

Where do I see the Barbary macaques?

In the cedar forests around Azrou, where troops of Barbary macaques — Europe-and-North-Africa's only wild monkey — lounge by the roadside. See them, photograph them, and skip the peanut sellers: fed monkeys become nuisance monkeys.

For second visits and nature lovers, yes: the cedar walks around Azrou, the lakes plateau (Dayet Aoua and its birdlife), trout farms, and Berber market towns like Ain Leuh. Our heritage routes give it a full day; tailor-made trips can give it two.

December to February reliably above 1,800 m — Ifrane runs a small ski hill at Michlifen and the cedars look absurdly good in white. Winter Fes–desert crossings occasionally meet snowploughs: allow margin, enjoy the show.
